Cookies are small files a website stores on your device to make things work or to understand how the site is being used. We use a small number of them. Strictly necessary cookies keep the site running. Analytics cookies help us understand what's working and what isn't. We ask before setting anything that isn't strictly necessary, and you can change your mind at any time.
This notice is part of our Privacy Policy. For anything about cookies or your data, write to legal@visualistapp.com.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small piece of data a website stores in your browser. Some cookies make the site work (you couldn't stay logged in without them). Others help the site owner understand how visitors use it.
Cookies set by the site you're visiting are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by someone else via a tool the site uses are called third-party cookies. We only use first-party cookies.
We also use similar technologies like local storage, which works a lot like a cookie but stores data directly in the browser rather than sending it back and forth with each request. Everything in this notice applies equally to those technologies, and we use "cookie" as shorthand for all of them.
A note on Visualist subdomains. This notice covers the Visualist marketing site, the product, and any other subdomains we operate (anything ending in visualistapp.com). Cookies set on one Visualist subdomain are shared across the others, which means you only see the consent banner once and your choice travels with you across the whole Service.
Cookies we use
We group cookies into two categories.
Strictly necessary
These cookies are required for the site and product to work. They keep you signed in, protect against security threats, and remember settings you've explicitly made (like whether you've accepted or declined other cookies). These don't need your consent under UK law, because without them the site literally can't function.
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| visualist_session | Keeps you signed into the product | Session |
| visualist_auth | Authenticates your account | 30 days |
| visualist_csrf | Protects against cross-site request forgery attacks | Session |
| visualist_consent | Remembers your cookie preferences | 12 months |
Analytics
These cookies help us understand how people use the marketing site and the product: which pages get visited, which features get used, where people drop off. We use this to improve the site and product over time. We set these only with your consent.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| posthog | PostHog | Product and site analytics. Stores an anonymous distinct ID and session ID. | 12 months |
PostHog is hosted in the European Union. It doesn't track you across other websites.
Marketing
We don't currently use marketing cookies. If we add any in future, we'll update this notice and ask for your consent before setting them.
How to control cookies
The consent banner. When you first land on visualistapp.com, you'll see a banner asking whether you'd like to accept analytics cookies. You can accept, decline, or close it without choosing (which counts as a decline). Strictly necessary cookies are set either way, because the site can't work without them.
Changing your mind. You can change your cookie preferences at any time. Open the cookie settings to update your choices. Declining after previously accepting will stop further analytics data from being collected; data already collected will be retained under the terms of our Privacy Policy.
Browser controls. Your browser also lets you block or delete cookies. How you do this depends on your browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge.
Blocking all cookies, including strictly necessary ones, will break parts of the site. You won't be able to sign in, for example.
Changes to this notice
If we change the cookies we use, or how we use them, we'll update this notice and the "Last updated" date at the top. For material changes, we'll also notify you through the consent banner.
